Kailash Bissa. Jaisalmer
A heart-wrenching incident happened for Jaisalmer on
the beginning of the Indian New Year and Navratras. Everything was going
normal. It was a big festival for the Hindus and the devotees observed a fast.
During the fast, suddenly it happened that Jaisalmer's Jawahir Hospital was
filled with patients after eating 'Manpasand' brand name Sahagar. Suddenly
patients of food poisoning started arriving at the hospital. Patients kept
coming one after the other and the doctors faced a challenge. By late evening
the hospital was filled with patients. When our correspondent Kailash Bissa
spoke to eyewitnesses, it was told that more than 50 patients were admitted to
the hospital. Some people said that more than 200 patients were victims of food
poisoning. District Collector Tina Dabi has ordered an inquiry and has advised
not to eat Sahagar of your favorite brand till the inquiry report comes.
The condition of some of the patients remains
critical. On getting information about the incident, former MLA Sangsingh
Bhati, former MLA Chhotusingh, Amardin Fakir and many leaders reached the
hospital and inquired about the incident from the patients. Police and
administration officers also reached the hospital. Significantly, the
negligence of the medical department came to the fore in this whole matter.
These days the medical department in Jaisalmer is running a war campaign for
cleanliness. In such a situation, the question arises that why the favorite
brand which caused the incident of food poisoning was not investigated? It is
being told that the expiry date was not written on this Sahagar packet of the
favorite brand. It is also being told that the Sahagar was old and this
accident happened after eating it. Because relatives of most of the patients
reached the hospital with this packet of their favorite brand and complained
that they became victims of food poisoning after eating it. Such products are
being sold under the nose of the medical department and the department has made
the war campaign for purity a business of extortion. There is neither
investigation nor action in the true sense. The inspectors of the department
have made a business of threatening the shopkeepers and extorting money.
Thousands of shopkeepers do not have food license in
Jaisalmer. Food items are being sold without food license. There is a provision
to impose fine and send them to jail against these shopkeepers. But the medical
department seems to have failed. Neither the packets are being checked nor is
it being seen that the goods are not being sold beyond the period. According to
the rules, the expiry date has to be mentioned on the packet of food items
along with complete information. But the department has been supplying food in
the name of investigation. Superficially, the medical department shows its
rigor by examining. Small shopkeepers are made pawns in the name of
investigation. Big elephants are saved. In the entire Jaisalmer district, more
than 2000 shopkeepers do not have food licenses. In the investigation, this
number can reach up to 5 thousand. But the department did not take any action.
People have not been getting food license for years. The department does not
have sufficient data as to how many people have made food licenses and how many
shopkeepers have not made food licenses. Years ago, the municipality used to
make food licenses and later this responsibility came to the CMHO. Jaisalmer
food inspector is neither serious nor does he have the will. People are selling
products by their arrogance. Not only this, right from street vendors and hot
markets to big shopkeepers and hoteliers, they are doing business without food
license, but the department is not taking any action. For the last few days,
the medical department is taking action in the name of appearances and taking a
few samples. It is not certain when these samples will be tested, when the
report will come and when action will be taken. Till date, such examples have
not been told when action was taken against someone and the shopkeeper was
jailed. The inspectors of the department are engaged only in fine collection
and extortion.
